How to Supercharge Net Zero with Energy Efficiency

As the world shifts towards a more sustainable future, the importance of energy efficiency cannot be overstated. In fact, it is becoming increasingly clear that energy efficiency is the next area for investment after the renewables revolution. This is because energy efficiency is not just a means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions; it is also a powerful tool for achieving a wide range of economic, social, and environmental benefits.

Energy efficiency can help supercharge the transition to a zero net carbon future. By reducing the amount of energy we need to power our buildings, communities, towns, and cities, we can make it easier and more affordable to meet our net zero targets. This is especially important because, while renewable energy sources like solar and wind are crucial for reducing carbon emissions, they are not always available. By investing in energy efficiency, we reduce our reliance on these intermittent sources of power and create a more stable, resilient built environment.

At the heart of SEFA’s vision is a thriving net zero carbon-built environment. This means buildings and infrastructure that are designed to be intelligent, efficient, and clean power hubs. By using advanced technologies like building automation systems, smart meters, and energy management software, we can optimize energy use in buildings and ensure that they are powered by sustainable energy sources.

To stimulate energy efficiency in buildings, the EU has implemented several policies and initiatives. The most significant of these are the revision of the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) and of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).

The new EED gives the Energy Efficiency First principle a legal basis, making it an important consideration for member states when making decisions about their energy consumption. In addition, the directive strengthens the existing obligations for energy savings by end-users and requires consumers, depending on the level of energy consumption, to implement energy audits and management systems.

The revised EPBD states that all new building constructed after 2028 must be Zero Emission Buildings (ZEB). The directive also states minimum energy performance standards to be imposed on public and private buildings. These aim to gradually increase energy performance, starting with the least energy efficient buildings. The goal is an entirely zero-emission building stock (ZEB) by 2050.Undoubtedly, achieving this vision will require significant investment and innovation. That's why we are calling for the introduction of a new market framework for energy efficiency. This framework would provide the means for the EU to achieve its net zero targets and create an innovative, new building management and performance industry. By incentivising building owners and managers to invest in energy efficiency measures, we can create a virtuous cycle of energy savings, carbon reductions, and economic growth.
